How pump and valve manufacturers in India can grow
Few engineering sectors in India have demand drivers as visible as pumps and valves. Public water programmes, refinery expansions and rising exports are all pulling in the same direction.
Imports remain large, though, and buyers are becoming more selective. Below we set out where the demand is, who buys, and the routes we use to help manufacturers win a larger share.
The market picture
Water, refining and exports are all growing at once, and organised makers have to earn their premium.
What's driving demand
- Rural water. The Jal Jeevan Mission had a budget outlay of ₹67,000 Cr for 2025-26.6 It now runs to December 2028.7
- Urban water and sewerage. AMRUT 2.0 has an indicative outlay of ₹2,99,000 Cr, with thousands of water and sewerage projects approved.8
- Oil, gas and refining. ONGC set an FY26 capex target of ₹36,920 Cr9 and IOC one of ₹33,000 Cr.10
Who buys
- Water-utility and irrigation contractors working to scheme specifications.
- Refinery, petrochemical and oil and gas owners buying through vendor lists.
- Process-industry plants buying replacements and upgrades.
- Dealers and distributors in agricultural and domestic pumps.
The price gap between organised and unorganised pumps is about 30%3. The organised maker therefore has to justify the premium with evidence.3

Market size. One analyst values the Indian pumps market at US$2.90bn in 2024 and projects US$4.14bn by 2030, a CAGR of 6.1%.1 Another puts Indian industrial valves at US$1.56bn in 2025, rising to US$2.34bn by 2031 (6.96% CAGR, 2026–31).2
Industry estimates. The organised pump industry is about ₹17,000 Cr3, of which about ₹11,000 Cr is agricultural and domestic pumps.3 The valve industry is about US$2bn, with over 300 manufacturers, and exports account for about 25% of production.4 The global valve market is put at US$80bn.4
Costs. Pumpset makers reported 10%5 growth in 2023-24. They also raised prices by 5–7%5 after winding-wire costs rose by about 20%.5
Water programmes. The Jal Jeevan Mission's total outlay is ₹8.69 lakh Cr7, including ₹3.59 lakh Cr of central assistance.7 AMRUT 2.0 approved projects include 3,568 water-supply projects worth ₹1,14,220.62 Cr8 and 592 sewerage and septage projects worth ₹67,607.67 Cr.8
Refinery expansions. IOC's ongoing projects include Panipat (15 to 25 MMTPA, ₹38,231 Cr11), Gujarat (13.7 to 18 MMTPA, ₹18,936 Cr11) and Barauni (6 to 9 MMTPA, ₹18,113 Cr).11
Trade. India exported US$2,340.0m of valves (HS 8481) in 2024, up from US$1,817.3m in 2022, and imported US$2,171.5m.12 Pump exports (HS 8413) rose from US$1,280.2m to US$1,466.1m, against US$1,481.3m of imports.12 China is the largest source of both imports: US$502.5m of valves and US$272.6m of pumps in 2024.12
Win more orders from the buyers you already sell to
Most pump and valve makers can grow before they leave their home market, by being specified more often.
What's driving demand
- Water-scheme contractors, municipal bodies and process plants are already spending, to defined specifications and approval steps.
- Every pump and valve you have installed is a future order for seals, impellers, trims and replacements.
Where the opportunity is
- New customers in your core market. Reach the engineers who write the specifications.
- Installed-base spares, replacements and sister plants. Map your installed base and reach the sister plants of customers you already serve.
What it takes
- Target lists, technical content and outreach that put your product in front of specifiers.
- Evidence that justifies an organised maker's premium over unorganised supply.
- Programmes that turn your installed base into repeat orders.
Take your existing products to new export markets
Valve exports are growing fastest in the Gulf, and European buyers already source from India.
What's driving demand
Where the opportunity is
- Regional and export expansion. Country-by-country plans for the Gulf, Europe, the USA and Africa.
- Adjacent industry expansion. A valve proven in water service can often be qualified for chemicals, power or food processing, and pumps follow the same pattern.
- Approved vendor lists. Refinery and oil and gas buyers purchase through approved vendor lists, and IOC alone has three large refinery expansions under way.11
What it takes
- Country plans, distributor search and export-ready product content.
- Finding the adjacent industries where your range fits with the least redesign.
- The positioning, proposals and capability content that a vendor-list application and its reviewers expect. Registration itself remains your team's process.

Valves. Exports to the USA rose from US$518.0m in 2022 to US$582.9m in 2024.12 France (US$56.5m to US$94.5m) and Italy (US$53.0m to US$77.0m) show that European buyers will source Indian valves.12 Qatar's valve imports rose from US$329.5m in 2020 to US$798.7m in 2024.12
Pumps. Pump exports are more concentrated. The USA took US$372.8m in 2024, broadly flat on 2022.12 Saudi Arabia rose from US$30.3m to US$50.7m and the UAE from US$63.0m to US$81.6m.12
Launch new products for your current customers
India still imports billions of dollars of pumps and valves, and much of that can be made here.
What's driving demand
Where the opportunity is
- Higher-spec and import-substitute ranges. Higher-specification products that move buyers away from imports.
- Upstream and downstream machines, and modular lines. Motors, controls, strainers and actuators that sit next to your core product.
- Integrated skids and complete lines. Pump-and-valve skids and booster sets you already assemble for a few customers.
- Packaged AMCs and retrofits. Annual maintenance and retrofit offers built on your service capability.
What it takes
- A technical case and launch campaign for each higher-spec range.
- Selling the adjacent items your buyers currently source elsewhere.
- Marketing your skid and service capability to the wider base.
Build a new line of business
For makers ready for a larger step, the same engineering can support a new business.
Where the opportunity is
- Component supplier to own-brand OEM. Move from supplying castings or sub-assemblies to selling your own branded range.
- Commercialising a captive foundry, forge or tool room. Sell spare capacity in an in-house foundry to outside buyers.
- New sectors and divisions. Build a separate division where your engineering applies.
